Philips holds a special place in the market as the inventor of airfryer technology. The HD9650 model is one of the most advanced members of the brand's premium XXL series. With its massive 7.3-liter capacity and Smart Sensing technology, does this model really deserve its price?
In this detailed review, we tested the Philips Airfryer XXL HD9650 over 3 months of daily use. Here are all our findings.
Premium Choice-19%Philips
The Philips HD9650 offers a design befitting the premium segment. The matte black plastic body doesn't show fingerprints and cleans easily. It weighs around 8.5 kg - one of the heaviest models in this segment, but this weight is an indicator of solid build quality.
Dimensions: 43.3 x 32.1 x 31.5 cm
Space Warning
XXL models require serious counter space. Make sure you have at least 45x35 cm free space in your kitchen before purchasing. Also, leave 15 cm clearance above for air circulation.
The basket mechanism is extremely solid. It can be pulled and attached with one hand and doesn't feel loose at all. The perforated tray inside the basket is part of the Fat Removal system that allows oils to drain below.
The digital touch panel on top offers modern and intuitive use:
The most striking feature of the HD9650 is Smart Sensing technology. This system detects the amount and type of food in the basket and automatically adjusts temperature and time.
Place the food you want to cook in the basket. No preheating needed.
Press the Smart Sensing button on the control panel.
The device analyzes the weight and density of food with sensors.
System automatically determines ideal temperature and time and starts cooking.
Sensors continuously monitor during cooking and revise settings if needed.
Smart Sensing Tip
Smart Sensing works excellently especially with frozen foods. Put frozen fries, nuggets or meatballs in, the device handles the rest. However, manual mode may give better results if you have very specific texture preferences.
We tested Smart Sensing with different foods:
| Food | Smart Sensing | Manual Setting | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frozen Fries (500g) | 18 min / 190C | 20 min / 200C | Smart Sensing slightly softer, manual crispier |
| Fresh Chicken Wings (800g) | 25 min / 180C | 22 min / 200C | Both excellent |
| Frozen Nuggets (400g) | 12 min / 185C | 15 min / 180C | Equivalent results |
| Grilled Vegetables (600g) | 15 min / 175C | 12 min / 190C | Manual better caramelization |
Conclusion: Smart Sensing gives good results with 80% accuracy. Great for especially beginner users or "set and forget" approach. However, expert users can achieve better results in manual mode.
Philips' patented Fat Removal system removes fat released during cooking from the food. The special design at the basket bottom allows fat to flow down and collect there.
Test: We cooked 500g chicken wings both in a regular pan and in the HD9650.
This means healthier cooking. However, in some foods (like steak), this fat loss may negatively affect flavor.
We regularly prepared different dishes over 3 months. Here are the detailed test results:
Settings: 200C, 20 minutes, stir once halfway
| Criterion | Score | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Outer Crispness | 5/5 | Excellent, crispy as deep fried |
| Inner Softness | 5/5 | Fluffy |
| Color | 4/5 | Even golden brown |
| Flavor | 4/5 | 90% close to traditional frying |
Settings: 180C, 25 minutes, flip halfway
| Criterion | Score | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Exterior | 5/5 | Crispy skin |
| Doneness | 5/5 | Fully cooked inside, juicy |
| Marinade Retention | 4/5 | Sauce held well |
| Overall | 5/5 | Indistinguishable from grilled |
Settings: 200C, 8 minutes (for medium-rare)
| Criterion | Score | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Searing | 3/5 | Not as good as pan |
| Internal Cooking | 4/5 | Desired doneness |
| Flavor | 3/5 | Missing smoke flavor |
Steak Note
Airfryer is not ideal for steak. Cast iron pan or grill should be preferred for meats requiring high-heat quick searing. However, excellent results are achieved for hamburger patties, meatballs, and beef cubes.
Settings: 180C, 15 minutes
| Criterion | Score | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Caramelization | 4/5 | Nice color |
| Texture | 5/5 | Crispy outside, soft inside |
| Flavor | 5/5 | Indistinguishable from oven |
The HD9650 works integrated with the Philips HomeID app.
Conclusion: App is useful but not mandatory. Device is fully functional without app.
2225W power consumption is standard for this segment. However, thanks to high efficiency, cooking times are short and total energy consumption is reasonable.
Comparison (500g fries):
| Device | Time | Power | Total Consumption |
|---|---|---|---|
| HD9650 | 20 min | 2225W | ~0.74 kWh |
| Standard Oven | 35 min | 2500W | ~1.45 kWh |
| Deep Frying | 10 min | 2000W | ~0.33 kWh |
Airfryer consumes 50% less energy than oven but more than deep frying. Still, a reasonable trade-off considering health benefits.
Cleaning is one of this model's strong points.
Dishwasher Safe Parts:
Non-stick coating is quality and food comes off easily. We observed no scratches or wear on the coating after 3 months of use.
Cleaning Tip
After each use, soak basket in hot soapy water for 10 minutes. Stuck residue comes off easily. Don't use abrasive sponges.
According to our measurements, the HD9650 produces approximately 65 dB sound while operating. This is slightly above normal conversation level. Noticeable while watching TV in open kitchen layouts but not disturbing.

Alternative Recommendation
If your budget is limited or smaller capacity is sufficient, Philips Essential XL HD9270 model is a more sensible choice in terms of price-performance. No Smart Sensing but same Rapid Air technology.
Philips Airfryer XXL HD9650 is one of the best models in the premium segment. Smart Sensing technology really works, build quality is superior, and cooking performance is excellent. 7.3L capacity is ideal for large families.
However, the high price tag isn't for everyone. If your budget allows and you need large capacity, the HD9650 is a quality investment that will serve you for many years.
